Managing Oxygen Therapy in the Summer Heat

Summer is officially here, bringing longer days, sunshine and warm weather. For those using oxygen therapy, the heat can present unique challenges. Here are some tips to ensure you stay safe and comfortable during the hottest months:

Hydration is Key

Staying hydrated is crucial, especially when using oxygen therapy. Dehydration can thicken mucus, making it harder to breathe. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day, and avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, which can lead to dehydration.

Keep Cool

High temperatures can be particularly challenging for those with respiratory conditions. On extremely hot days, try to stay indoors during peak heat hours, usually from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you need to go outside, seek shade and wear light, breathable clothing. Use fans and air conditioning to maintain a cool environment at home.

Equipment Care

Heat and humidity can affect your oxygen equipment. Ensure your concentrator is kept in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Regularly check your equipment for any signs of overheating or malfunction.

Safe Exercise

Staying active is important. And our POCs are designed to have a reliable supply of oxygen wherever you go.

Here are some tips for exercising safely during the summer:

  • Plan Your Activities: Try to schedule your outdoor activities for the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening. If you exercise, consider indoor alternatives like walking in a mall or using a stationary bike at home.
  • Monitor Your Symptoms: Pay close attention to how you're feeling. The heat can exacerbate symptoms, so if you notice increased shortness of breath, dizziness or any other concerning signs, take a break and cool down. Have a plan in place to seek medical attention if needed.
  • Stay Connected: Let friends, family or neighbors know your routine and check in regularly, especially if you live alone. It's good to have someone aware of your condition who can offer assistance if needed.

Enjoying Summer

With a few precautions, you can still enjoy the beauty and activities of summer. Stay cool, hydrated, and vigilant about your health. Here's to a safe and happy summer season!
